Sitemeter Crashing Web Sites Using Internet Explorer on August 1, 2008!
SiteMeter is bringing down every site where its counter code is loaded when the visiting browser is Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and 7.0. The error may also affect Internet Explorer 5.5.
Tens of thousands of publishers use sitemeter to track their content, including thousands of bloggers. It has been a great tool for analyzing my website’s traffic data.
The text of the error is "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site."
How to fix the IE error on Wordpress, Blogger, and other sites?
I removed the Sitemeter tracking code from my sites and now all is loading fine.
For further status, visit http://www.sitemeter.com in Internet Explorer.
If it works, they’ve probably got it fixed.

It took a while to find but below is a post by SiteMeter for what it is worth.
Greetings,
Our hosting provider has scheduled an outage on August 3, 2008 from 12:01 AM - 05:00 AM to consolidate their network into a single autonomous system. The following servers will be affected:
SM1, S17, S21, S26, S36, S37, S38, S39, S40, S41, S46 and S47
They will be migrating to a new network hardware infrastructure during this maintenance outage. The actual outage time maybe less than scheduled outage time. We apologize that your account will be affected during this scheduled maintenance. If you have any questions please let us know.
Thank you,
SiteMeter Support
Thank you for reporting this! When all those sites started to self-abort inside IE, I thought my browser had been infected with a virus or something. You just saved me a fresh wipe and reinstall!
I have been browsing online more than 3 hours today,
yet I never found any interesting article like yours.
It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all webmasters and bloggers made good
content as you did, the internet will be much more useful
than ever before.
